God choosing man, Part 1

By awagner

So here we go, embarking on this quest of settling Calvinism in my brain. If you recall, I proposed to tackle the question in four parts: Looking at God’s choice of man, man’s choice of God, what it means for one choice to be the basis of another, and then which is the basis of which. So, here, I am beginning part 1. My first step for each part will be to gather relevant Scripture. Below are the passages I’ve scraped together that seem to be relevant. Please feel free to add any others that you can recommend.

Isaiah 65:11-12
Matthew 24:22-31
Mark 13:20-27
Luke 18:7
John 3
John 6:37-65
John 15:16
John 17:6
Acts 2:23
Acts 13:48
Romans 1
Romans 8
Romans 9
Romans 11
1Corinthians 2:7
Ephesians 1
Ephesians 2
Colossians 1
1Thessalonians 1:4
2Thessalonians 2:13
Hebrews 9:12
1Peter 1
1Peter 2:8
2Peter 1:10

Nice collection of verses, and very fast. The only one that made me scratch my head as to why you included it was Rev. 7:14. Care to comment?

  3. Jason Says:

wow, you read them very fast as well….Rev. 17:14, my mistake, good catch!

    Brother Andrew.

Glad to see you digging in the Word of the living God!

Can I give 4 simple recommendations:
    1. Be sure it is not a mere intellectual exercise (I have not sensed this in what you have written, but thought I’d pass it on as a warning)
    2. Study to find what the Bible teaches… i.e., to see what each passage is teaching – what is the writer’s point.
    3. Avoid talking about “ism’s” or categorizing people as “ist’s”
    4. Don’t make it your habit to study the Word at 2 in the morning as I note in these posts!

    Ok, make it 5:
    5. Realize that it’s going to take work and time to grasp things… Let the Lord be your teacher… according to His timing.

    Rejoicing in a living Christ,
    Bruce

Wise words from a wise man of God.

I don’t know what’s up with the time stamps around here, but that 2 in the morning is definitely wrong. I was most definitely long-unconscious by that hour last night!

There’s another comment I want to make about your point 3, but I want to meditate on it some more, and possibly turn it into another entry. Stay tuned!
